7 Ways to Give Compliments that Have Nothing to Do with Looks

Is it hard for you to find the right words when giving a compliment? Do you find yourself searching for well meaning words to compliment someone that has nothing to do with an article of clothing or how someone looks? If you are looking to spark real connection with someone, giving compliments that go beyond looks can dig deep and make someone feel really special.

In addition, our words matter, even if they are positive reinforcements and compliments. Even well meaning compliments could fuel some people’s addictions or illnesses. Advocates in the body positivity and eating disorder space have noted that many of the positive comments they received on their bodies kept them in their thinking that being small equals being more lovable. This is not to say to not compliment people’s beautiful earrings or stellar leggings. It is to say that commenting on the body is less appropriate.

The 7 compliments below can be tailored and given some extra love from you:

>> Thank you so much for always checking in on me, and for showing me kindness by reaching out. I love your big heart, and wanted to share my gratitude.

>> I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your effort in all that you do. You always put your best foot forward, and it makes it that much more enjoyable to work alongside you.

>> Your easy going attitude is a breath of fresh air. I love spending time with you because it is care free!

>> I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your positive attitude. It always uplifts me when I hear your voice or see your face.

>> You are really a great listener. I always feel so heard after I tell you something. I was reflecting on how rare and special that is.

>> Your work really inspires me. I know how much effort you put into what you do, and wanted to let you know that after I look at something you put together, I am left feeling inspired and motivated to do my own work!

>> You are a great mom/dad/sister/brother/[fill in the blank]. Your commitment and immense love you give your family is really something to be amazed by. You are doing a great job, and I wanted you to know it.
