Do you have a hard time finding the right words when giving a compliment? Or maybe you find yourself searching for well meaning words to compliment someone that has nothing to do with an article of clothing or how someone looks? If you are looking to spark real connection with someone, giving compliments that go beyond appearance can dig deep and make someone feel really special.
Our words matter, even if they are positive reinforcements and well-meaning compliments. Even well meaning compliments could be triggers for some people. For example, advocates in the body positivity movement and eating disorder space have noted that many of the positive comments they received on their bodies kept them in their disordered thinking that being small equals being more lovable. But, we do not need to completely eliminate positive compliments from your interaction. Consider these 7 compliments to help reduce or remove compliments that focus solely on the bodies or appearance of others.
It is encouraged to tailor the compliments based on how you like to deliver compliments and your relationship to the person receiving the compliments.
